Avgust Černigoj

1898 - 1985

Avgust Černigoj (b. 1898 in Trieste – d. 1985 in Sežana) was a Slovenian painter and graphic artist, one of the most significant avantgarde artists in Slovenia. He studied at the academy in Munich and enrolled at Bauhaus in Weimar in 1924. It was Černigoj’s studies at Bauhaus that had a crucial impact on his artistic oeuvre, above all the influence of Wassily Kandinsky and László Moholy-Nagy, professors who were leading the workshops at the time.

During his studies at Bauhaus, Černigoj became acquainted with the concept of geometric abstraction, which he developed in his constructivist opus 1924-1929 in the form of collages, assemblages, and graphic art, which was the most important phase in his long and versatile artistic activity.

He also collaborated with Ferdo Delak on publishing the avantgarde magazine Tank (1927) in Ljubljana. The Avgust Černigoj Gallery, with its 1400 exhibits donated by the artist himself, is located in Lipica (Slovenia) and was designed by the art collective “Novi kolektivizem” (NK) from Ljubljana.
